- Language and EAL / VAL Support at VNTH
- At Viet Nam Tinh Hoa, we ensure every student can thrive academically and socially in both English and Vietnamese. Our dual-language environment reflects our belief that bilingualism enriches learning and identity. Importantly, there is no additional charge for EAL or VAL support at VNTH.
- Our Approach
- The EAL (English as an Additional Language) and VAL (Vietnamese as an Additional Language) programmes support students in developing both academic and functional language proficiency. This aligns closely with our school’s mission and Language Policy.
- Students’ proficiency is assessed using WIDA tools and teacher observations across the four domains: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. These results guide each student’s placement, learning targets, and support plan.
- How Support Works
- Our model is flexible, data-driven, and regularly reviewed to ensure progress. Support includes:
- Withdrawal sessions: Small-group instruction focused on language development.
- In-class support: Scaffolding and co-teaching to make lessons accessible.
- Co-planning: Collaboration between language and class teachers to adapt learning tasks.
- Pre-teaching: Key vocabulary and background knowledge introduced before lessons.
- Targeted enrichment: Extra opportunities to accelerate progress when needed.
Teaching emphasises both academic and social communication, using modelling, visuals, structured talk, and scaffolds. Students’ home languages and cultural identities are recognised as assets that strengthen learning. Teaching is delivered by specialist teachers, classroom teachers, and teaching assistants.
Assessment and Exit
Students leave the EAL/VAL programme once they can meet curriculum demands independently. Their progress continues to be monitored to ensure lasting success.
